As web designers, we need to keep abreast of the latest developments in web design and they are in constant change. What we notice is that some trends in 2013 are the same as in 2012. Below, are the web design trends for 2013.

1. Responsive design

2012 was the year that saw the number of mobile users go up significantly and this shows no signs of slowing down. Users like to be able to see sites through their mobiles. Responsive design allows websites to adapt to different devices such as laptops, desktop, tablet and smartphones.

2. Use of HTML5 and CSS3

This again, is a big one. HTML5 and CSS3 will continue to be a trend in 2013. CSS3 replaces heavy graphics for mobile and CSS3 animations replace javascript. HTML5 replaces flash.

3. UI Elements

This is a trend on mobile devices where the use of gradients, thanks to CSS3, is prevalent. CSS3 also supports animations and transformations.

4. Retina Support

This screen display was first used by Apple with the iphone4 and is used with the iPad and some Macbooks. For this, designers need to save two images, one at double the resolution, then the second one is half the size. The larger image will be scaled down to the half size resolution to give a very crisp image on retina screens.

5. Fixed Header Bars

We've seen an increase in the use of fixed header bars. Designers use the CSS position: fixed; property. As the user scrolls down your page the header bar will stay fixed at the top, visible at all times. Convenient if wanting to go back to the homepage and for navigation, providing excellent user experience.

6. Large Photo Backgrounds

We've seen many examples of websites using oversized photographs, usually seen on the homepage. It's a great way of capturing attention and when done well looks visually impressive. As Jake Rocheleau says about large photo backgrounds, "When blended into your layout, this design technique can give your website a major edge in marketing....behaves as custom branding."

7. CSS Transparency

Using CSS3 designers can use the opacity property setting the opacity level for an element so there is no need to use photoshop. Also, we can use the background:transparent property as used in the example below.

8. Digital QR Codes

QR Code apps are found everywhere from bars and restaurants to event venues thanks to the increase in mobile smartphones. QR stands for Quick Response Code and as Jake Rocheleau says "has developed from the older UPC barcodes. "They have also appeared built in to the design of websites and could become something of a fashion in 2013."

Why Redesign your Website?

If you want your visitor to stay longer than a few seconds on your website, you need to think about how your website looks and feels. Is it user friendly? A clue is to look at your navigation and layout. Can the user find their way around easily? Does your website have fresh content or has it been a while since you last updated it? If so, it may be time to think about redesigning your website.

It is time for a redesign, when

your website is outdated, looks tired, has broken links and old content

your website is still using Flash, tables and frames

your website does not generating enough traffic and the visitors who are coming to your website bounce back

A redesign is not just about going for a new look, its about improving the user experience. And it is a continual process, one of tweaking your website so that you generate more traffic and leads. Its about giving your visitor the best possible experience so they stay and engage with your products/services.

So, before approaching a web designer here are a few things to consider:

when is the best time to do a redesign of your website?

what are your objectives for the redesign and what do you want to achieve?

will the new design be useful to my current customers?

what will be useful to my prospects?

what about the structure of the website?

what about the content?

how can I convert browsing visitors to customers?

do I need to update my content regularly and do you need a content management system?

With the right plan and strategy in place, your web designer can help you reflect the purpose and goals of your website.

According to Dan Schawbel, author of "Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success," the rise of social technologies has made branding more personal and within reach.

Personal Branding, by definition, is how we market ourselves to others.

Social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter have given individuals and small companies the same power as big companies when it comes to promoting their services and products. We are now responsible for managing our reputation online as well as in real life.

Are you happy with the face your company is showing to the world? Or are you leaving your reputation to chance?

Do you want to know how to discover your brand? Here are some tips on how to do just that.

1. Discover your brand

Spend time writing down how others see you. Organised? Reliable? Fun? Quirky? Dependable? How do you make them feel? If the words you have chosen are the same as how others see or experience you then it is part of your brand.

2. Create your brand

Ask yourself: What words would I use to describe my work? Example would be creative or strategic.

3. What is your Purpose?

What exactly do you do? What do others come to you for? Ask yourself: What is it that makes me unique? What makes me stand out from the competition?

4. Your brand description

Now look at the words you have chosen and select only those ones that show your strengths. Put them together to make a mantra. It should convey who you are to others in a clear way and should be memorable. E.g. “dependable strategic planner,” or “quirky, fun, creator”

5. Promoting your brand

Once you know your brand, its time to promote it online and in real life. Through your website and blog (blogs rank higher in search engines and over time you show your expertise to the world) Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook and through business cards and curriculum vitae if relevant.

It's worth taking the time to define our personal branding as it has a huge impact on our business.

5 Well-designed Ecommerce Websites

Ecommerce websites have come a long way in terms of design. They weren't always the most appealing of websites but now there is a growing awareness of the importance of high quality design in creating an excellent user experience. A good user experience results in the user staying on your site for longer periods of time browsing your products, thereby increasing your sales.

There are a number of factors that increase the time the user spends on your site.

1. A highlighted product

2. A good ecommerce website is one where the the product matters and stands out on the page.

The layout should make it easy for the user to search for products as well as browse the products on your site so use lots of images and text.

3. High quality images

It is best to use good images, where particular attention is paid to good lighting. Bad quality images will turn your user off. If you want them to buy and not just visit, make sure you have high quality images of your products.

4. Easy navigation

Your visitor will most likely want to browse your products and then go to other sites and compare prices before making a decision so do not make it difficult for them. Make an easy to use navigation to help them find things easily.

5. Marketing

Make sure you have lots of information about your products on the site. This is one of the reasons of the loss of sales according to marketers.

Below are examples of e-commerce sites with outstanding web design.

jolena.be

Pinterest's popularity and what it means for web design

Pinterest is a bookmarking site which helps its user to organise and share images, websites as well as anything else they find on the web. Pinterest puts content into sticky-note sized blocks like pinboards that fill the browser screen. Each board is filled by a photo and when you hover over it, you have the option to "repin" "like" or "comment".

This design has proved popular and there are examples on the internet of companies and bookmarking sites, such as Sworly and Chill who have adopted it.

According to statistics Pinterest had 3.6% of referral traffic compared to Twitter's 3.61%. A huge jump from July's 0.17% referral traffic. It is only Facebook that comes close.

This growth shows Pinterest's popularity and companies are taking note, especially of the design. The individual profile pages resemble Facebook's timeline and could set the trend for web designers looking to future trends.

The co-founder of Pinterest Ben Sibermann had this to say about the new design, "I'm so excited about it, We wanted to make it more beautiful...to make your profile different in kind than the profile you have on Facebook."

About the old design, he said, "We labored over that grid, there were literally dozens of that which were fully coded. We felt like, if your collections didn't look awesome, if they weren't beautiful, why would anyone spend the time to build them?"

This is evidence that good design makes for a great experience on the web and proving important to the consumer and big companies are taking note. Great news for web designers showing that design is valued by the user.

Come and follow us on Pinterest:

Are newsletters still a good marketing vehicle?

What about all the social networks, blogs and other clever ways we can communicate online? Is email marketing not outdated?

Definitely not! Latest benchmark figures show that email marketing is providing great results - especially for small to medium sized businesses - with an increase in email-open-rates in the last 12 months across all sectors.

It works because -

businesses with a good email list and database will instantly reach more people via email than social networks

it builds relationships, loyalty and trust

it allows targeting

it is data driven

it drives direct sales

So we know email marketing can be successful, but the basics have to be done right:

Make sure that your list of recipients have given you permission to send them an email. These are the people who want to keep up to date with your business and have signed up for updates, thereby showing an interest in your business.

Write interesting and helpful content for your reader.

Keep them coming back for more. Email marketing is one of the best ways to promote specials and discounts and customers will be checking out these offers by clicking on the link to your website.

The Email must look professional, that means no spelling mistakes or styling errors. Check, check check again.

Have a clear call to action in your email, eg visit this or follow us on Facebook/Twitter. Your web designer will advise you on layout so that your offers stand out on the page.

Test HTML emails. They display differently in different email clients, so what looks good in google mail may not look good in yahoo or outlook.

You will improve your business if you follow the above steps and it will help build relationships with customers and potential clients who will feel connected to you and your business by receiving your news on a regular basis.

Good luck!

Call to action buttons – 3 case studies

Call to action buttons are important elements of the user experience. In these 3 case studies, I will show how paying attention to the size, positioning and colour of your call to action buttons can grab the user's attention and persuade the user to buy your product or sign up for news.

1. Giraffe

This page has multiple call to action buttons and they are all in a prominent position at the top and middle of the web page. The colour of the call to action area contrasts with the rest of the site. There is a call to action to join the Giraffe club at the center of the webpage. The font colour of this call to action is darker than the other fonts and the font size is nearly as big as the logo, showing the importance of this button.

giraffe.net

2. Lemonstandapp

Here, the call to action buttons are at the top of the web page. The width of these two buttons is almost the width of the logo. They are in a different colour to stand out and have whitespace, that is space between the button and the surrounding elements. There is a play video call to action button to the right. The arrow on the button reinforces the message that this is a clickable area.

lemonstandapp.com

3. Winestore

A lot of thought has been put in to the layout of this homepage. The focus is on the product and on the call to actions placed prominently so the user can buy the product.

winestore-online.com

Humour in Web Design

From a play on words in the headline, to funny photos and illustrations, sometimes in the form of comic characters, humour can engage the visitor and create an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Below are examples of lighthearted humour to be found in illustrations as well as 404 pages to make the websites more personal and help draw attention to the message of the company so that it can be understood in an instant.

1. Responsive design

It is still in its early days, and many web designers are just learning about it but 2011 saw a huge increase in the number of websites built responsively. Google analytics show more visitors browsing a website from a mobile browser. Web designers use media queries to apply different styles to different devices while using the same content so design is adapted to screen width and orientation of various devices such as the tablet and mobile. For web designers this means moving away from fixed layouts and adopting fluid widths in percentages and ems. Responsive design means longer design and development time but its less expensive than creating a separate mobile site. Below is an example of a responsive website.

www.colly.com

2. Mobile gets bigger

The mobile traffic and usage will continue growing and is expected to exceed 10% in 2012. It is therefore recommendable that any business should plan to get their websites ready for mobile phone and tablets.

3. Social media

Social media has become everything to everyone, and as more and more people and brands engage via the ever growing number of social media sites, the question of how to match up relevant information with the right people will become vital for businesses to succeed.

With over 98,000 tweets per minute, 695,000 Facebook status updates per minute, 79, 364 Facebook wall posts per minute and 600 new YouTube videos uploaded per minute (and this is just the tip of the iceberg), it is important to provide people with the information that you know they are interested in or they will quickly be 'turned off'.

4. Customer Service

Paul Boa, co-founder of Headscape stresses the importance of customer service. Paul thinks that customer service is key in 2012: "As web designers, we like to think we just build websites. We don't. We also offer a service to our clients. We are often so obsessed with user experience, code and design that we forget other important factors such as good communication, understanding business needs and exceeding client expectations. If we are going to prosper in 2012 we need to blow our clients away, not just their users."

This is exactly what we want to do in 2012!

5. Typography

Typography continues to be an important element in design. It makes a website more visually interesting and creates a good user experience. It is an art form and web-safe fonts are growing with browsers slowly supporting them, but using font face web designers can dip into this art form and experiment with fonts finding the perfect fit for their website.

www.visualrepublic.net

www.pointlesscorp.com/

6. Ribbons, badges and banner graphics

This was a huge trend in 2011 and is likely to continue well into 2012. They are popular as background graphics to be found in banners, as navigation backgrounds, logo backgrounds, sometimes with a stitch border, badges and background graphics. Lots of tutorials are freely available for web designers on the web showing how to create these graphics so lots of inspiration around and designers can join the trend.

You start a new business and need a website - the big question is - should you have a custom designed website or should you go for a pre-built low cost website template? There are many advantages to having a custom designed website. While some clients find the cost of a custom web design high, this article will show how opting for website templates could be risky.

Read on to find out 5 reasons why as an long-term investment in your business it is recommended to have a custom designed website:

1. A custom designed website is unique

It allows your company to stand out against the competition with a unique and memorable design. Website templates are used by thousands of businesses, therefore, if you use a website template to build your website, you will likely find that your competition has used the same template as well. This makes it difficult for customers to distinguish between you and your competition, because the websites look so similar and you might be losing business to your competition.

2. A custom designed website will incorporate your company branding

Your web designer can choose layout and colours for the website that match your logo and company branding. Website templates come with their own styling and with specific layouts, so if you wanted to add your own graphics or different sized content you could break your template. To change it, you would need to hire a web designer unless you know how to change the backend code. By looking at the objectives of your business a unique design will fit the purpose of your website and will help to fulfil its goals. The design should also meet the expectations of your target audience to ensure that the website is successful.

3. A custom designed website improves SEO

SEO experts believe that by creating a unique site, rather than using an off the shelf solution, ensures good SEO and will make your site stand out. When designing and developing a website, a professional web designer will make sure that he uses the latest techniques to ensure that the website will be search engine friendly and that all the relevant keywords are in the right place. Yes, sites like Wordpress and Blogger allow one to host and to set-up a website quickly and free of charge, but pre-built templates are not as search engine friendly. For a user who is does not have any knowledge of SEO and coding it will be difficult and time consuming to optimise and edit a template accordingly.

4. Custom designed websites are scalable

They adaptable to your needs and grow with your business. Your web designer will know your business and objectives and will have an idea of what features and functionality you would like on your site now and in the future and will plan for it and use appropriate technologies.

5. Custom designed websites are standard compliant

The web designer creates code that is standards compliant, which means it works in all browsers. One thing to watch out for with website templates is really old code that is not all-browser compatible.

Conclusion:

It seems that if you did opt for a website template to save money or development time, you would still need to work on it to make it search engine friendly. A web designer can help you with the web development as well as the design and make your website a perfect fit. The extra time you would need to put in in making the website template work would be time that could have been spent in marketing your business instead and could end up costing you more than a custom web design.

When creating a website, a designer will pick a colour or combination of colours based on its value and emotion it carries. Colour has a personality and the designer will choose carefully knowing that colour helps to show the user what the company is about and what products they are selling.

Brown is a neutral colour so it doesn't carry emotion. That doesn't mean to say it has no meaning. Brown conjures up images of the earth, home and wholefulness.

Brown says stability, dependability and reliability. With Brown, home coming, nurturing, cozy and warm come to mind.

In this post, I have selected 10 websites that use the colour brown whether it be in a photograph of a brown interior for a restaurant, a textured wood background image for a cereal company or alongside the colour yellow to add brightness for a cafe. I hope these examples will give you lots of ideas for your next projects.

The social networking site, Facebook, is set to make changes and once again this will meet with a litany of complaints from users. Every time Facebook has made a change in the past, its users have shown their discontent.

This time, its the layout of the Profile Page called Timeline that will change as well as Facebook's Open Graph apps platform making it easier to share media.

The company's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said at the company's F8 Conference last week about Timeline, It's a way to tell all the important stories from your life on a single page. Timeline is like an online scrapbook. It gets rid of the single column of posts and replaces it with a wide page format which includes a large photo at the top which you choose and is public, as well as your profile photo. A dynamic panel made up of Update info, where you get to edit your profile information; View Activity, shows all your activity since the day you joined Facebook and an actual timeline where viewers can look back into your history and view your updates and contents. If this worries you, don't worry you can control your timeline.

You can add or remove items and you get to decide who sees an item in your timeline. Facebook gives seven days in which to get your profile ready before your Timeline is published.

So be warned!

The Timeline is available to developers but there are still a few bugs to sort out, so its best waiting for a few weeks when it will be available to all Facebook users.

Watch out and let us know what you think!

Last week the visionary and genius Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple, so to celebrate his life at Apple here are some key moments in his career followed by inspirational quotes by him and his resignation letter to Apple.

Biography

Steve Jobs first began Apple with his friend Steve Wozniak in a garage in Silicon Valley in 1975 and sold their first computer to hobbiest. In 1977Apple makes a huge sensation with a prototype Apple II and in 1978 the Apple II becomes the first mass-market personal computer. In 1980 Apple goes public.

Steve Jobs invented and co-invented products that would revolutionise the way we work and play today. In 1999 he introduces the new Power Mac G3 and the color iMacs as well as the "iMac to go" - the original iBook - which turned Apple's fortunes around. In 2000 Steve Jobs becomes Chief Executive. Because of the iPod series which was launched in 2001 the way people listened to and buy music would never be the same. In 2007 Apple released its first smartphone which revolutionised the way we use our mobile phones today and the release of the iPad tablet in 2010 has started the touch-screen computer revolution.

Quotes

We think the Mac will sell zillions, but we didn't build the Mac for anybody else. We built it for ourselves. We were the group of people who were going to judge whether it was great or not. We weren't going to go out and do market research. We just wanted to build the best thing we could build.

When you're a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you're not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You'll know it's there, so you're going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through. [Playboy, Feb. 1, 1985]

Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it's really how it works. The design of the Mac wasn't what it looked like, although that was part of it. Primarily, it was how it worked. To design something really well, you have to get it. You have to really grok what it's all about. It takes a passionate commitment to really thoroughly understand something, chew it up, not just quickly swallow it. Most people don't take the time to do that. Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful that's what matters to me. [The Wall Street Journal, May 25, 1993]

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. [Stanford commencement speech, June 2005]

Steve Job's resignation letter:

CUPERTINO, Calif.- August 24, 2011- To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know.

Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Typography is an essential part of good web design.

Good web designers know typography should be eye-catching and that it adds personality to the website, giving it an overall theme. Thanks to CSS developments, web designers are no longer limited to a few fonts.

The latest trend in web design is the use of big fonts. It seems the bigger the better.

Of course there are some rules to follow:

Keep the design minimal and choose 2-3 fonts. Use more and there is a danger of too having too much going on, driving the user away from your site.

Pay attention to letter-spacing and line-height for easy reading. Words that are bunched-up are difficult to read and looks ugly. Don't forget to give some breathing space in between characters.

Use sans-serif fonts for the content as its easy to read, keeping serif fonts for headings.

I have chosen examples of the creative use of typography below to inspire you:

The Footer appears at the bottom of a page and is not considered the most important part of a website. Whereas before the footer contained nothing more than contact details and copyright information, now web designers are embracing the possibilites of a multi-functional footer.

Today's web designer is coming up with creative designs for the footer. More space is given, sometimes up to half a page and can include anything from a contact form, twitter updates, a secondary navigation to various calls to action. Overall it is more dynamic and involves the user offering a more user-friendly experience.

So, its time to let go of minimal information and open to the possibilites of including more on your business and yourself. Take the opportunity to remind the user why they came to your website in the first place and give them the opportunity to interact with your website, it will keep them happy.

Below are examples to inspire you on your next design:

What you should know.

Rules set out by the EU Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive give web designers just one year to make sure they gain user's consent before placing cookies that track programmes on their devices such as computer or mobile.

However, the cookie consent laws will be phased in to allow British businesses time to make the necessary changes.

The Information Commissioner's Office, (ICO) published a document that outlines ways to comply.

They define a cookie as a small file of letters and numbers downloaded on to a device when the user accesses certain websites. Cookies allow a website to recognise a user's device.

What should I do?

The ICO advise taking the following steps:

Check what type of cookies and similar technologies you use and how you use them. Start to clean up your webpages and stop using any cookies that are unnecessary.

Assess how intrusive your use of cookies is. Some uses of cookies can capture detailed profiles of an individual's browsing activity which the EU considers to be very intrusive the more privacy intrusive your activity, the greater the need to gain consent from the user.

Decide what solution to obtain consent will be best in your circumstances. There are a number of ways to get user consent.

The user's browser settings are one way. Another way is to have pop ups that ask the user directly if they agree with a yes/no option. You could use a Splash page to make users aware of changes to the site. Or opt for a Terms and conditions page where you ask the user to tick a box to show they give consent to the new terms.

The ICO stress the need to be open and specific about how your website operates and user compliance will only be accepted only when the user is made aware of what they are agreeing to and have shown their acceptance in some way.

This is Gary's second book. The first Crush It! was on how to build your career around your passion.

The Thank you Economy is a must-read for small businesses and start-ups. It gives plenty of examples of business successes thanks to using twitter and facebook not as a means to push company products or sales but as a part of a two way conversation with the customer, as a way to show you care for them. There is a need to return to the caring that our grandparents's businesses showed towards their customers.

Gary writes about caring for your customer through personalized thank yous not general ones. The power of word of mouth cannot be underestimated. This works in both positive way and negative way. To deal with the latter Gary thinks it is better to deal with an unhappy customer openly and address in confident manner rather than have an unhappy customer who keeps quiet and who you never see again. As an example, to show his appreciation for customers, he has given away free bottles of wine with thank you notes.

And this is someone who knows how to do business and who walks his talk. His entrepreneurial skills turned his family business around, increasing annual profits from $4million to $60 million in ten years.

In 2006 he launched Wine Library TV and turned from traditional media tools to the social web using twitter and facebook to connect with his customers. Today he is an internet celebrity. He has become hugely popular and businesses have begun to notice his approach. He is invited to talk at conferences on the subject of social media and in his talks he is passionate about how businesses need to embrace these communication tools to develop intimate relationships with their customers. Today the tools are twitter and facebook, tomorrow they could be something else. The key is to stay current or be left behind.

What I have learnt from reading this book is that social media is not about pushing your sales, product or message, it's about interacting with people. It is a two way conversation. It is about listening to people and addressing their concerns. You need to be transparent, real, and have meaningful conversations.

Recently, I have noticed single page websites popping up everywhere on the internet. Although they have been around for a long time, often used for low-budget static websites, the ones around today are beautifully crafted designs that are dynamic thanks to CSS3.

PRESENTATION

CLARITY

CONTENT IS KING

The single page website layout is presented in a way that is easy on the eye. Small chunks of content will appeal to your visitors and make them want to stay on your site for longer. The focus is strong design.

There is a clear content organization structure. Instead of having different pages for each section of the website, all content is on one page. Anchor links allow the user to navigate from one part of the page to another.

The constraints of space helps you to choose your words and images carefully to get your message across and avoid superfluous words. Marketeers are always telling us that simple messages are the key to success as they are easy to understand and good web designers know this. The visitor will be impressed that they instantly know what you offer and can make a decision on whether to buy straight away. This can lead to higher conversion rates.

6 examples of single page websites.

To create a successful Contact page you need to ask yourself 2 important questions.

1. What is it you want from your visitors?

Sales enquiries? Bookings? Customer feedback? When you can answer this question, it will be easier to design your page. You will know the best and most convenient way for customers to contact you, either by contact form, telephone, email, postal address or through social media such as facebook and twitter.

Increasingly, businesses are providing plenty of contact options. It is quite common to see social media icons such as facebook and twitter on contact pages. This is a smart move as you don't want your visitor to become frustrated at the limited contact options before they contact you.

Some businesses choose to have a contact form as it is a sure way to know what the visitor wants from them. All the necessary details of the visitor enquiries are presented in a way that's easy to address. Other businesses, put their email address on their website instead. There is an increased chance of receiving spam emails this way.

2. What can you do to make it a valuable resource for your visitors?

Visitors pass through your Contact page to get in touch with you, either to enquire about your services or simply to talk to you, so it deserves the same attention that you give other pages on your website. Done successfully, it can help boost online sales.

It is now popular to add a google map that shows the location of the business and a web designer can embed the map in the contact page. Please see an example below.

Here are examples of modern Contact pages:

How to create a perfect 'About Us' page

Your 'About Us' page matters. It matters to the visitors who come to your site to find out more about you, your services or your products.

Imagine a face-to-face meeting with a prospective client. You meet, introduce yourself, say a little about what you offer, how long you've been in business, mention your unique selling proposition (USP) and upon leaving hand out your business card.

Well, I want you to think of the 'About Us' page as a faceless meeting, with the same elements as a face-to-face meeting firmly in place.

To recap, here are 6 key points:

Presentation

Introduction

What you offer

What you stand for

Company history

Contact details

1. Presentation First impressions count. You wouldn't dress scruffily for a business meeting so the same applies here. A cluttered about us page will do you no favours and it looks tacky. People don't like too much going on in a website, so don't fill every area with a different image or piece of text. Instead, go for a clean, professional look.
Here is a good example:

view website

2. Introduction
Here you get to say who you are, introduce yourself, your team, your company. You may want to include photos of yourself and/or your team. Keep the content in this section short and to the point. Web surfers can only read so much on a website and you don't want to bore them or send them away with large chunks of text.
Here is a good example:

3. What you offer
Time to shine. Make your content informative, crisp and clear. Showcase your skills if you are a designer. How about making it visually interesting by presenting your skills in bullet point format or highlighting your USP in another colour.
Here is a good example:

view website

4. What you stand for
What are your aims? Write your mission statement here. If you have a code of ethics, put it in here.
Here is a good example:

view website

5. Company History
How long have you been in business? Do you have any awards, statements of recognition, great testimonials that you could put in here? Building credibility and trust in your business is key.
Here is a good example:

view website

6. Contact details
It is good business etiquette to give out a business card at a meeting. So make sure your contact details are visible on the page. You want to make it easy for your prospective client to contact you. It could be you've impressed him/her and now they want to buy your product. Having an address shows you are in a real place in a real location and that you exist! This creates trust and credibility in you as a company and the client feels safe to do business with you.
Here is a good example:

There are a lot of "do-it-yourself" templates around these days which virtually anyone can adapt to suit their needs. For example you can upload your logo, decide on your colour scheme and text, but your business brand will not come across in the same way as if you have a website built specifically for you by a professional web designer.

Just One Example Of A Template Website Home Page

One of the hardest things for a small business owner to do is to differentiate themselves from their competition. However, it is still very common to see pre-made website templates that make all small businesses look very alike!

Quite simply put, templates do not offer you the flexibility that having your own site does.

Next to the ready made website templates, the word template also describes a framework or structure which is used when developing a complex website and CMS. When visitors navigate their way around websites they notice that some content is repeated and structured in a defined way. If the navigational elements were placed in a different position on every page or the design was graphically different throughout the site it would make confusing reading. In this example, a template creates a framework for the elements.

A Unique Design Is A Must

The worst templates are those which don't allow you to use your own branding or design within them. You can't build your brand if others are also using a similar template if you want a unique identity it is important to choose a designer who can produce a unique website design for you.

Newsletters can be a good example of this. If you want to keep at the top of your customers minds when sending out newsletters, yours needs to stand apart from the rest.

Templates are often seen as a "quick fix" solution but actually, by having the long-term foresight to see that you may want to make some major changes to your site later on, it is false economy to spend anything at all on template sites it is far more cost effective to employ the services of a web designer who can make those changes for you in keeping with your brand and image.

Also, did you know that if you do choose to use a pre-designed template, you may not own the copyright to that design?

An Example Of A Unique Design

Here are some very good pointers to keep in mind if you feel tempted to use a pre-designed template for your website:

Your visitors will judge you by how professional and unique your website looks.

The distinction that you worked hard to create for your brand and business will be lost if you opt for a pre-designed website.

The most popular pre-designed templates are used to create thousands of other websites and are therefore easily recognised by your potential customers who are browsing your industry in search of a resource.

Your creative options are vastly limited and it can become extremely frustrating if everything you want to do with your site has to conform to the design template you chose.

To summarise, remember that one size never fits all and you usually get what you pay for. However, templates as frameworks to house information is an important part of creating highly-functional web sites.

Many businesses concentrate on hiring skilled programmers and Search Engine Optimisation companies in the hope of gaining higher rankings for their website rather than concentrating on getting the design of their site right in the first place.

It takes many skills to produce a fabulous looking website such as a flair for design, copy-writing, being good with words, having an eye for colour, being able to pinpoint the main selling points of the site and build the content around those.

Good Design

A Bad Design

Here are some tips on what not to do to help you to avoid an unprofessional looking site:

Complicated Navigation Your website visitor has landed on your site because they are looking for something specific you need to make it easy for them to find what they want, not have to search through a complex series of links to get to the one page featuring the product or service they want to buy.

No Clear Objective It is crucial that your website tells your visitors in the first paragraph what your site is about. Tell them in as few words as you can why they need to read on. Without this information they will more than likely not bother to try to find out like a lot of us, they could be short on time and most people scan websites rather than read every word to find what we want as quickly as we can.

Outside Advertising & Animations Few things are more irritating than having flashy adverts popping up all over the place while you are trying to read a website's content. Think about it, do you really need to feature those annoying little animations which detract from what your website is, a professional portrayal of your business and what you are about?

Lengthy Headings Headings are multi-functional. Firstly they provide order on your page so your visitors can easily find what they are looking for. Secondly they summarise what the text following them relates to so you need to make sure they are just that, a summary of what appears next and not a long drawn out sentence about your subject.

Light Coloured Fonts On Light Backgrounds It is quite amazing how many websites feature a yellow font on a white background virtually impossible to read and to be avoided at all costs!

Messy Layouts You wouldn't submit an untidy proposal to a client why should your website standards be any different? Your layout needs to be clear, succinct and easy to read.

No "Call To Action" Call to action buttons entice your visitors to click so that you can take them where you want them to go in one easy step. Your buttons should be placed prominently on your pages.

Boring Use Of Colour By using only two colours it would be restricting the use of what is available to you colour adds interest to a website. Even if your logo is only two colours, start with those and build complementary colours around it. As long as you are consistent with your use of colour you can achieve a site which is great to look at.

Too Many Blue Underlined Or Dead Links Links should appear in their natural state when they are live, i.e., www.oswebdesign.co.uk There are few things more annoying than a dead link so your links must always be live and should not appear as underlined text which, when clicked on does nothing!

No Reason To Return If you don't provide your visitors with fresh content on a very regular basis, what reason do they have to come back? They have visited once if nothing has changed the next time they land on your page, why should they return? Make it easy for them by providing a sign up box so you can send them your newsletter or product information, telling them when they can expect to see your next product updates or news.

People enjoy looking at nice things. Some of us have a passion for art and get excited by beautifully presented images and clever photography.

If your website is an online shop, it is crucial that you portray your products in their best possible light and it is well worth investing some time and energy early on in your design process by engaging a good professional photographer.

It is also important to invest properly in professional photography when featuring portraits of people. Imagine a male model who is promoting the sale of suits the website visitor won't want to see a shot of him taken into the sun where the glare has caused unnecessary reflection or an estate agent won't want to feature shots of a house which show it as untidy and dark.

These days there is no excuse for poor imagery on web pages as there are several websites which offer professional images for a small price if you are lucky you can even sometimes find great images which are totally free of charge. Try these websites for your photo libraries:

Veer Getty Images I-Stock Photo

Your web site is your organisation's window to the wider world. You wouldn't want to arrive for a special party looking like you hadn't made an effort, so why would you present your business in poor light to your prospects and customers? Don't forget that the eye is automatically drawn to images on a page rather than to the text surrounding it in other words, images are usually the first things we look at so make the most of them!

Providing consistently great content on your website, in your newsletters and via your e-mail messages really is the secret to converting your subscribers into customers.

So, how do you go about finding the right form for your website so that you end up with the desired result more enquiries which lead to more customers?

Sign up forms are not rocket science - everyone who wants additional customers should feature a sign up form on their website because this is a simple way of recording who is interested in your site and who you should keep in touch with with by sending them new information about your products or services.

However, pop-up forms are a total "no-no" for professional websites.

They could even drive your potential customers away as there is nothing more irritating than a website which tries to pre-empt your next move - your visitor will probably click their back button to escape as fast as possible!

Most people want to be able to sign up for additional information in as few clicks as they can. Too many sites require too much information, date of birth, mother's maiden name, favourite pet - most of these are unnecessary and irrelevant and asking too many questions will put visitors off.

Here are some suggestions as to how you can make your sign up forms more effective:

Put the Form in a Prominent Location on your Website
The best solution is to ensure your sign up form is contained on one of your most prominent pages and of course a link provided to it from the main menu. Most of us don't have the time to read websites word for word and we have become adept at scanning them. According to research, the best place for your form is actually to the top left of your screen, as people tend to scan from left to right and then to the bottom of the screen.

By placing your form in a prominent position, you are far more likely to increase the number of potential customers who sign up to receive your newsletter or ask for more information via your website.

By spending time thinking about the wording you use to convince people to subscribe, you can convert your website visitors to subscribers and avid readers of your newsletter and blog articles.

Keep It Simple
When you visit a website and the signup form looks like it'll take more than 10 seconds to complete, do you navigate away to another site where the form is more concise and doesn't ask too many personal questions? Yes, thought so!

Keep this in mind when talking to your web designer about your sign up form. All you really need is the visitor's name and e-mail address to be able to send them updates (and their postal address only if you are going to send them something). If you really do need your subscriber's mobile number you can always ask for it later as you build on your communication with that person.

Give Your Visitors a Good Reason to Subscribe
Your visitors probably receive dozens to hundreds of emails every day so ask yourself why they should make room for yours?

You need to very clearly and concisely summarise the benefits of subscribing. For example, do you provide a service that no-one else does? Are your products available for next day delivery? Do you send your potential customers a free sample?

Use Bold Text
You could even use larger or bold text to tell them why they're going to be better off by subscribing to your emails, newsletter or e-marketing campaign.

Here are some examples from websites featuring great sign up forms:

What Does A Good E-Commerce Site Look Like?

No matter whether you are a large or small business, whether you sell your own t-shirts or have an astrology portal you can start a stand-alone online business or you can adapt your business to an online distribution model.

Selling online has some advantages. First of all you are able to sell globally, which is great. If you are in the UK, it is only a matter of time before you could receive orders from Japan or the USA. The borders are gone.

On the other hand, if you start something online, you should be prepared to satisfy your consumers' needs quickly. You also need to have your logistics prepared beforehand. Doing your homework is fundamental to success.

So what does a good e-commerce website look like?

The most important thing your online shop must do is to give the visitor exactly what they are looking for. Your visitors will know what they want and they are never more than a few clicks away from looking at your competition.

So keep it simple! Make sure your website is not cluttered and is user friendly

Get them shopping!

A home page with a lot of company information and text will just not get your visitor into shopping mode. Instead your home page should engage the visitor and get them shopping. Featured, most popular and new products should be displayed in a neat grid. The navigation should be simple and clear and you should always have a good "call-to-action".

Quality Product Photography

Since the visitor is not in a real shop and can't touch or try your products, the quality of your product images are key and are all you have, therefore they need to be the best and are worth every investment. Talk to a professional commercial photographer like Media Wisdom Photography, they will be happy to give advice.

Cross Sell

If you have related products, make sure you suggest other relevant products to the visitor.

Recommended Pages

Home Page

About Page

Products Page

Photo Gallery

Shopping Basket Page

Offers Page

Contact Page

So this is what you need to look for in order to produce a successful e-commerce site:

Easy navigation

Great product photography

Logical product categories

Clear pricing

Appropriate functionality, such as search, quote calculator, image zoom etc.

Quick and simple check out process

Error proof and secure payment system

Website security and confidence

Good e-commerce examples:

Sunglass Hut

Siblu

The Navigation Structure Of A Website & Good Examples

One of the first things to do is to think about the page structure of your website, sketch out how you would like to see the elements and discuss your ideas with your web designer. The structure you decide on will dictate the names of the navigation buttons and links between the various pages on the site.

It's worth spending time on the structure as, if you get it right, it will go a long way to ensuring your visitors enjoy the time they spend on your site and the stronger the chances are that they will end up doing business with you.
Make sure that you ask your designer to create a logical and easy to follow navigation system, allowing your visitors to reach their desired page or content as quickly as possible.

Ensure you also make it easy to be able to add new content, particularly news items or new products and services, as the last thing you want to do is have to perform major changes to the overall design of the site each and every time it needs an update.

Home Page:
Every web site has a home page. It is the first page most visitors will see and is also the most important page for gaining good search engine rankings. This is because the search engines give more kudos to your Home Page content than the content on any other page. Your Home Page should give a clear summary of what your site is about, what your products or services are, and clear instructions on how your visitors should utilise the facilities on your site. It should also provide links to every page on the site wherever possible and every page should link back to the Home Page.

Contact Details
As the web is generally quite impersonal, it is important to make your visitors feel comfortable and if they can see how you can easily be contacted via an email address or telephone number, they will be more inclined to get in touch with you than if they end up feeling frustrated every time they click to try and find your details. If people travel to visit you at your office or premises it is important to also include directions, maps, and relevant helpful information as to whether or not you provide car-parking on site.

Sign Up or Enquiry Form
You really should ensure that your site includes an online form at the top level of your navigation system. This makes it easy for visitors to ask questions, request quotations or sales literature or even give you feedback on your site, service or product.

Products & Services
Your product or services pages should describe as concisely and accurately as possible, exactly what you have to offer. Keep in mind that you need to make it easy for your visitors to choose what is right for them and, if your site is an ecommerce-enabled site, for them to click to purchase your products. If you don't provide online ordering, make it easy for them to express their interest by being able to contact you.

Information Pages
You Information Pages are where you can ensure your content contains keyword-rich phrases to encourage the search engines to return and crawl your site. These information pages should typically include links to the following :

About: Company Profile: company history, mission statement, key personnel, position in the market place, memberships of trade or professional bodies.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's): If you publish these on your site it is a good way to underline your expertise in your particular area of expertise.

Testimonials: Testimonials are used to establish your credibility. For example, people are more likely to spend money with you if they have read a bit about your background and like what others have said about you. I can't stress enough that testimonials are really very powerful and should always be included in a prominent place on your website.

Case Studies: Include examples of how you have helped your clients to get what they started out searching for.

Newsletters: Don't forget to include links to your newsletters. You will have given them a lot of thought and time, so you don't want to restrict their readership.

A clear and logical site structure will help you to gain new prospects and clients for your business by ensuring your visitors get to the information they want with a minimum of effort.

Here are a couple of examples showing great Navigation Menus:

How To Speed Up The Web Design Process

Think and plan carefully

If you know what you want, you will save a lot of time as this will avoid your designer spending time working on designs which you may decide you don't like. Always be as clear as you can about what you want and if you have concerns that your designer doesn't share your vision, find out whether it's possible to discuss a prototype.

Ask your designer whether there is an option for a Template
If you want to speed up the graphic design process have you thought about using one of your web designer's pre-designed templates? Most web designers will have their own templates from which you can choose a design which works for you and your business. However, it is crucial that you don't confuse these with the templates you will find elsewhere online. Pre-set template websites can be very restrictive and frustrating to work with and are often incompatible with many of the other elements you may wish to add later.

Be clear and respond quickly
When your designer calls or sends you an e-mail to ask a question, ensure you are quick to respond. Maybe your designer has sent you a choice of images and needs a decision on which one to use on your fabulous new site - be sure to advise what your decision is as soon as you possibly can. It's no good if you take a couple of weeks to return the call or e-mail or go away on holiday without leaving clear and concise instructions. (If you are going on holiday, think about leaving a contact number so that work is not delayed while your designer waits for your return).

Some important facts to tell your Web Designer before you start
Give your designer as much information as possible which will save them asking you questions and holding up work if they have all the answers up front:

Explain why you want a new or updated site.

Think about what would happen if you decided to stay with your existing site, e.g., do you want to sell products and your existing platform doesn't allow this? (This will automatically give an experienced designer a lot of information without you having to go into each and every detail).

Describe your business in as few words as possible (your description can be used as a keyword description on your home page).

Think about what it is about you or your business which is unique and share the news. (For example, have you been in business twice as long as your competition)?

How can your specific background help to entice new customers over and above your competition? (For example, you may have a qualification that few others have don't be shy, tell your designer what it is).

Why do you believe your customers should come to you instead of someone else? Don't be backward in coming forward - divulge this information it is important in setting you apart from the crowd.

Tell your designer what your tagline or slogan is as this can be used on your site and help to promote your business online.

You also need to advise your designer what type of businesses or people you are hoping your website will attract.

Another important and final point, do tell your designer what your budget is for the re-design or new site. This needs to be compatible with what the designer is charging and will help you both to save time and avoid any misunderstandings right from the beginning.

How do visitors read websites?

Presumably you have a website because your aim is to convert visitors into customers (or subscribers). It's therefore important for you to understand how your visitors scan and read your pages so that you can position the most important elements of your web pages in the most effective place.

On the whole people tend to "scan" web pages rather than actually read them, picking out individual words and sentences. Research tell us that visitors read horizontally, usually across the upper part of the content area. They then move down the page a bit and read across also horizontally, and typically, for less time than previously. Finally, they typically scan the left hand side vertically.

Homepage layout
The visitor's eye usually fixes first on the top left hand side of the page, before it starts to scan from left to right. Only after hovering over the top portion of the page does he or she tend to explore further down the page.

Headlines
Upon entering a new page, dominant headlines most often draw the eye first, especially when placed towards the top left, (and sometimes towards the top right). Photographs, contrary to common belief, aren't typically the entry point to a homepage. Compelling text is a more powerful way of keeping your visitor's interest. People view both the headline and content underneath it when the headline is bold and a similar size to the content text. When viewing a headline which is larger than the content which stands out on it's own line, people tend to view the headline and skip the content.

Also, underlined headlines tend to discourage people from reading content on a homepage which is exactly the opposite of what you want them to do.
When visitors read content under headlines on homepages, they often only look at the left one-third. In other words, most people just look at the first couple of words, and only continue reading if they are compelled by what they're reading.

Typically a headline has less than a second of a site visitor's attention. This backs up the fact that your first couple of words need to really grab the attention of your website visitors. This is also true for content make sure that your first few words are descriptive and really grab the viewer's attention.

Typeface
If you want your visitors to read (rather than scan) your site, try using a smaller typeface as this encourages people to be more focused on what they are reading. Larger headlines encourage scanning (as opposed to reading) more than smaller ones but of course you still need to ensure the font is large enough for your visitors to read!

To scroll or not to scroll
As you would expect, the areas you have to scroll down to view are not viewed that often. However, that doesn't mean you can't get people to look at content which is positioned low down on a scrolling page.

Their eyes typically scan lower portions of the page seeking something to grab their attention. Their eyes may become fixed on an interesting headline or a word which really stands out, but not on other content. Again, this points to the necessity of sharp headline writing.

Where to locate your Navigation
Navigation placed at the top of a homepage performs well and is seen by the highest percentage of people and looked at for the longest duration. More people view right-column navigation for longer than left-column navigation.

Article layout & style
Short paragraphs receive more attention than those with longer paragraphs as the longer paragraph format seems to discourage viewing. Surprisingly people tend to look at text elements before accompanying photos and the use of summary descriptions which lead into articles are popular with website visitors.

Images
Larger online images tend to hold the eye longer than smaller ones and clean, clear facial images attract more attention on homepages.

So, here are a few reminders you can use when thinking about your website design:

Place your most important message to the top left of your home page

Don't underline or bold your headlines

Use a small typeface for your content

keep your paragraphs short

Use large images on your site

11 Tips what to do after your site goes live

You have worked hard with your web designer and your site has gone live. You now need to ensure your wonderful new website is found! Here are a eleven top tips to get your site working for you:

Local Business Links Look for other websites which will provide links to your site. As well as looking nationally, it helps to request links from local businesses which are complementary to yours in the areas where your business operates. For example if you offer transcription services, you could approach a website selling transcription equipment.

Free Listings You can create a free listing for your local business on Google Maps and Yahoo Local . Your business will then show up on a map when people search locally in your area.

YouTube If you have a video, you can promote this, images and audio content via You Tube. Google's "universal search" displays not only web page content, but also relevant listings for images, videos, local businesses and audio clips. For example, if you were to create an informative video explaining what your business offers and upload it to YouTube www.youtube.com you could see a lot of additional traffic coming your way.

Incoming Links As Google (and other major search engines) rate the number of quality incoming links to your website as an important indicator of relevance, additional links will help you rank higher in the search engines. It is important however to ensure you include only links from those sites which are both popular and can be trusted.

Online Directories Submit your site to online directories. A directory is a website listing which is sorted according to specific category and subcategory. You can list your site in the free Open Directory Project www.dmoz.com and in the Yahoo Directory

Industry Specific Directories If you belong to various trade associations which have member directories, ask them for a link too. You may have to pay for this option but the more links you have, the higher your page rank will be!

Complementary Links It's a good idea to send a personal e-mail to the contact listed on the site where you would like your link featured. However, do remember to link from complementary sites as Google determines what your site is about, who you link to and who links to you. Not just any link will do, it's quality links you're after. Persistence will pay off in the end so don't be tempted to give up!

Articles Write articles for others to use in their newsletters. You can increase your online visibility if you write articles about subjects within your area of expertise and send them to editors as free content for their e-mail newsletters or websites. Don't forget to ask them to provide a link to your website and a short description of what you are selling or the services you offer. There is an abundance of information on how to do this available from one of the many article marketing sites.

Press Releases To broadcast newsworthy events, you can send press releases to various journalists who work within your specific industry. The links to your site contained within online news articles should improve the amount of traffic to your website.

Start Writing a Blog If you offer regular informative content and comments on other forums and blogs, people are likely to link to your website via your blog, thereby increasing your website's page rank.

Social Media Marketing By setting up Twitter, Facebook and Linked-In accounts (to name just three) and regularly posting credible content via your online profiles, you can develop and build a following of people who are interested in the tips and expertise you can offer in your specific field. By attracting interest in this way you are encouraging people to visit your website where they can gain more valuable information.

The Importance of Portfolios

It is important, for small businesses in particular, to portray their portfolios to impress their website visitors and prospective clients. Portfolios are especially important for contractors, web designers and artists, and are an ideal tool for them to display the quality of their work. A portfolio should include examples of your best work, the work you are proud of, and the work that best demonstrates your skills.

What to Include:
A great portfolio can transform website visitors into clients but you need to ensure that you only showcase your best work.

Before you start:
Think about how you can answer your visitors' questions.
Your online portfolio could be a blog or a website but either way, what you need to remember is that it should always answer the questions your potential clients are likely to have.
Your online portfolio is an important tool for people who are looking to hire specific services they will want to check you out before making contact.
It's also important that your site accurately represents what you're offering because you may not necessarily have a tangible product to sell - it is therefore difficult to show clients what they're paying for in advance. If your clients are not impressed by your online presence, they won't bother to make contact to make that initial enquiry.

The aim of your Portfolio
Your portfolio's job is to impress and persuade potential clients. Simplicity is the key people need to know why they should hire you over and above someone else, so if your portfolio is well laid out, clear and impactful, it will tell them what they want to know within seconds.

What to show
Think from your ideal client's point of view and ask yourself what that person is going to be interested in seeing. You can then decide which of your work you want to display within your portfolio.
Choose a maximum of ten items to display. It can be very tempting to include all the work you have done but in reality people are only going to have the time to view between five and ten before moving on to view something else.

Case Studies
Within your Portfolio, you should turn each project into a case study detailing the client brief and how you created and fulfilled the project.
Each project should include a list of your skills and how they can be utilised. It's valuable to include client testimonials because, like your portfolio, these are very powerful in underlining your skills and value from others points of view.
Use items that made you feel excited - this way your enthusiasm will shine through when discussing your portfolio with potential clients.
A good way to build your reputation is to attach your portfolio to your blog a simple way of giving your visitors the information they need to get to know the style and quality of your work.

Multiple Portfolios
If you work within more than one market, it's an idea to create different portfolios, each representing an area of your work. You will automatically know which portfolio is the best fit for the specific area of expertise you want to portray.

Give your visitors the answer they are looking for, as simply as you can, and remember, only the best will do!

Do you understand why your customers buy from you?

Why is it important to understand your customers?

Understanding your customers is a crucial part of the website creation process. Ask yourself questions which help you to look at your customer's motivations and include references to these in your content. Customers buy from you for different reasons based on various motivations. Some buy because they think your price is the fairest, some because they find your services impeccable, and some because of your well-earned reputation in your industry.

By getting to know and really understanding your customers, you will be better placed to direct your time, energy and resources into creating compelling content which will result in the right customers for you.

Here is a checklist which should help you to look at your customer's motivations and to identify where there could be opportunities, (and where there may be potential problems), so that you can ask your web designer to update or even re-create your website to attract more interest.

It is important to ensure :

Imagine that you want to buy a product in the knowledge that there are a few sites which sell it. The first site you go to takes 30 seconds to load. The next site loads quickly but the product images take ages. You visit a third site and end up buying from there because time is tight and everything you needed to see loaded in just a matter of seconds.

That you have a clear call to action Decide exactly what you want your viewers to do. Do you want them to click on one of the links in your sidebar? Do you want them to read about your product? Do you want them to visit your blog? Or do you want them to buy from you? A clear call to action which says to your viewer, What you are looking for is here behind this button click it!

That your messages are not hidden

Place your content so that the high impact information can be seen within the first screen view (so potential customers see it as soon as the page loads), otherwise they may give up and move on.
Your call to action needs to be easy to find - it's no good making viewers an offer if they have to scroll down to be able to see it.

That your website content is easy to understand If you have a fantastic new product you are launching, are you explaining it in terms everyone will understand? As soon as a viewer sees information they don't understand, the real danger is that they will go somewhere else.

That if you have a shopping basket, your checkout process is simple If your customers love your product and want to buy it online, ask yourself what you have done to make it as easy for them as possible? Is it a simple process or do they have to meander through a maze of billing and shipping addresses, additional offers and products they don't even want?

Keep it simple!
If you want to make your website both appealing and clever, you need to give it the attention your business deserves, even if this means a total re-design to make sure you are not losing those valuable potential customers to a business which has understood its customers and has taken full advantage of their thought processes.

Don't give your customers the opportunity to feel confused!

Why an Online Marketing Strategy is important when planning a website

You have decided you need a website and you want as many visitors as possible - but where to start?

Arrange to meet your marketing people, or, if you don't have marketing people, re-visit your marketing plan. Your online marketing strategy should form part of your overall marketing plan, so if you haven't included it, that is a good place to start.

Consider the message you are trying to get across. For example, do you sell quality sportswear with the emphasis on "quality"? If so, you will want to think about your objectives and the content you need to produce to ensure your website is going to attract more visitors who are looking for quality (rather than quantity).

In addition to your website, an online Marketing Strategy encompasses:

Blog Articles (your very own opportunity to prove your expertise in your field)

Social media (Twitter, Linked-In, Facebook, etc)

Inbound Links

Here are some important factors to consider when planning your website:

1. Time

Some people think either that a website takes a couple of days to build WRONG or that it can take for as long as 12 months WRONG AGAIN!
It only takes a long time to complete a website when decisions are delayed. A successful website requires proper planning and this all takes time, but certainly not as long as 12 months.

To assist in the process, you need to:

Be available to explain clearly exactly what you have in mind to your web designer (and don't be afraid to ask questions)

Respond with quick decisions if queries crop up along the way

Make it easy and straightforward for your web-designer to be able to update your site as you add to your services or product ranges

2. Your niche market

Before you start you need to really think about what it is you offer that makes your clients buy from you. List these positives as bullet points and build on them to create your site.

Don't forget that your website is your opportunity to show off your talents within a portfolio by showcasing examples of your work or products which are backed up by testimonials from clients.

3. Blog Posts

By writing blog articles incorporating some keywords which are relevant to your website, you will be able to hold the interest of readers and entice them to read more about you and your products and services on your website. Visitors who have read your blog and then come to your website, are considered warm leads which are already presold and will more than likely convert into leads and either purchase your product or will get in touch with you.

A blog will also help your search engine optimisation and search engine ranking as every blog post creates a new page which is full of keywords.

4. Social Media

It doesn't stop there! You need to think about which social media networks are appropriate for you and your business. Twitter is a great way to share knowledge by providing others with recommendations and links to useful websites. LinkedIn is a great tool for connecting with like-minded professionals whilst Facebook might be totally inappropriate for your business. There might also be social media networks that are relevant for your industry and it could be worth joining them, so do some research.

After your website is live, updating your social media with tweets and useful comments (schedule these in your calendar if you don't already) will encourage people to read your blog which, in turn, will get people interested in your website where you can really show them what you and your business are about by show-casing your work and testimonials

5. Inbound Links

Once your website has gone live, you can list it on some of the many online directories and business sites. The more links you have coming in to your website the better. However, don't be tempted to provide links to other websites unless they are important to your site and add value to your overall strategy.

To ensure you remain popular online it really is crucial these days to continually provide useful and interesting articles and blogs for your readers and website visitors.

Plenty of visitors but no conversion?

The process of improving your goals conversion rate is known as Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO).

It can be tricky to identify the reasons for a low conversion rate as there could be several contributing factors. However, a good way to measure your success and identify how you could improve your site is to compare your website against similar sites.

If you sell bicycles for example, you need to know your conversion rate and the conversion rate of your most similar competitor.

If your conversion rate on a product is 7%, and the average conversion rate for a similar bike 15%, then you have some work to do on your website. However, if your rate is above average already your website is not likely to increase your sales. Have you thought about adding another model or type of bike to your portfolio which may attract more interest?

Most websites convert less than 2% of their visitors into customers (i.e., people who do what you want them to do - buy a product, make an enquiry, call, click through, download a document, signup for newsletters, etc.)

Reasons why your conversion rate could be low and how to improve it:

Headline: A good headline can make a huge difference in conversions so spend time thinking about how it could be improved.

Call To Action Buttons or Links: Decide on the best possible location for your call to action button or link and make it easy for your visitors to click.

Call To Action Message
Test the message itself to find out whether your "Sign up Free" button is going to convert more highly than a link which says "Learn more about Raleigh bicycles now."

Testimonials
If you don't already have testimonials on your main page, one of the first things you need to do is to include them - when these are placed in a prominent position they can have a very positive effect on your conversion rate.

Top Landing Pages
One of the most important factors when looking at your conversion rate is your landing page, which is the page your website visitors arrive at after clicking on a link. It could be your home page, or any other page in your site. This gives your potential customers an overall first impression of your business and your products.

Ensure your copy is as descriptive as possible and include some promotions. The best way to do this is to think about where the person has come from, and who they are. By supplying a good match, you are more likely to engage your visitors and increase your conversion rates.

Well designed landing pages also result in higher conversion rates than simply directing people into the home page of your site (which in effect, is like suddenly deserting them and taking a risk they might click their back button to move on to you competitor).
Give your visitors exactly what they were looking for and you will be far more likely to make a sale.

Five Tips on Landing Page Design

Really think about your headline and make sure it's as appropriate as it can be

Position your most important elements in the upper 300 pixels of the page

Study the landing pages of your competition and pay special attention to the design and organisation flow of their pages

Keep it simple and use standard conventions

Ensure your page loads quickly

Top Exit Pages
Top Exit Pages are those pages visitors are leaving from when they exit your site.

To optimise your conversions it's a good idea to study the patterns of how your customers engage with your site. You can sign up to Google Analytics for free. By utilising this information, you can ask your web designer to make adjustments to your site to ensure you are giving the visitors to your site more of what they are looking for.

Website Statistics

Every website does or should have some kind of web analytics to measure performance and to track visitors behaviour. One of the best and most well known packages available is Google Analyics - and the great advantage here is - its free!

What does Google Analytics Offer?

Google Analytics is a powerful, free software tool that tells you exactly where your visitors came from and what they do when they actually get onto your site. In a nutshell it enables you to see:

where your visitors are coming from

which keywords they used to find you

which links they click on

which pages they visit

which page they were on when they left your site

how long they stayed for

How to Read the Statistics

Visits - how many visits there were to your page. (A visit is defined as a page view when that user has viewed no other page on your site in the past half hour).

Pageviews - how many times the pages on your site have been viewed.

Pages/visit - how many pages, on average, users view when they come to your site.

Bounce Rate - what percentage of users left after viewing only one page on your site.

Avg. Time on Site - how long each user spent on your site.

New Visits - what percentage of your users have not visited your site before.

The Visitors Overview - how many visitors have come to your site.

Map Overlay - shows the countries your visitors are coming from.

Traffic Sources Overview - which percentage of users are getting to your site by typing your URL directly into their browser, and via search engines, referring sites, and other routes such as emailed links.

Content Overview - the top five most viewed pages over the time period you're looking at.

The difference between Visitors and Hits

Visitors: A visit is when a person or robot visits your site. It consists of one or more page views - one visitor can visit your site many times.
A visitor is the browser of a person who accepts a cookie.

Hits: Each file sent to a browser by a web server is an individual hit.

Which keywords have been used?
Use the Google Adwords keyword tool to establish which keywords people type into the search engines to find sites which are similar to yours

What is the bounce rate?
Bounce rate definition: the percentage of initial visitors who leave your site after arriving at the entry page without viewing other pages on your site. A low bounce rate means your visitors are exploring your website in greater detail and clicking through to explore different pages.

Conversion rate definition:
The ratio of visitors who achieve a goal against their total website visitors (For example, if 5 visitors out of every 100 sign-up for your newsletter you have a 5% conversion rate for your 'sign-up to newsletter' goal).
When people talk about their "website conversion rate" they are actually talking about their website goals conversion rate.

When should you have a CMS?

A CMS - Content Management System - is very useful when you are planning a website with a lot of dynamic content such as news, case studies, a blog or an online shop. It gives you the freedom to update your content, images, products, prices etc., when necessary and in your own time, without having to rely on your web designer.

In times of free open source CMS programmes such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal & Co., more and more websites are built with a CMS. However and especially for smaller static websites where contents is not being updated on a regular basis a CMS is very often unnecessary and can sometimes even be a bad choice.

But how do you know what is suitable for you and your business and whether your website needs a CMS or not?

When you start planning your website try to determine as soon as possible whether or not you will include areas like news, a shop or a blog on your website which need regular updating. If you only plan to update your website once or twice a year, you can consider your website to be a static brochure website and a content management system will not be necessary.

Not only are the costs for the development of a website including a CMS higher and the development takes more time, but also using those open source systems can bring disadvantages as you might have template and layout restrictions and data security can also be an issue.

Smaller changes can easily be made by your web designer as and when needed or you can use very basic and minimalistic CMS like Cushy CMS. Your web designer will only need to add a line of code to the web pages and areas you would like to update, and you will be able to make some basic content changes yourself.

This will give you the freedom you need without having the extra costs of a complex CMS back-end, and once your business and website grows and becomes more dynamic, you can still think about adding a custom developed CMS to your beautiful custom made website.

Design and development skills are both required in order to produce a fully functioning and successful website. Even though the intricacies of their workings may be totally different, their aims are similar and one is as crucial as the other if you really want to see results.
However, it really is important to know the difference between the two, as when you are designing a new website, or asking your designer to put your new site together, you need a basic understanding of what you need to ask them for, i.e., what your visitors see when they look at a web page is the actual design of the page. What makes that website worth the time required for them to navigate it, is the development (which lies behind the scenes)

DESIGN

Good web design means creating great looking websites whilst ensuring they are still as user-friendly as they can possibly be. Experienced designers will have a wealth of knowledge and practice utilising not only HTML, but also CSS, Javascript and other graphics packages such as Photoshop, Fireworks and Flash to name just a few. By using these tools they create the foundations of the website and, together with you, decide right from the outset, just how your website should look when it's completely finished. The actual design result does not contain any coding and is just a graphical representation.

DEVELOPMENT

Web development is the programming in the back end which converts the beautiful design into a good working and professional website. The web development can be very basic for a small static brochure website or more complex for a website which requires to be dynamic, needs a content management system, payment facility, shopping carts or a register and login area with user name and password. Also online forums such as Wikipedia are a good example of web development. To ensure that your website is performing well and remains competitive and the back end is flexible it is very important to engage experts when planning your website and to really think about what your website needs to do when you start and what functionalities you want to add to the site in the future.

The back end programming is also a vital element required in order to increase the visitor's online experience - it is important to remember that the development goes hand in hand with the design which holds the visitor's attention at the very beginning of the whole process.
If you want to produce a really user-friendly and professional-looking website, which is eye-catching, visually attractive and does the job you want it to do, both the design and the development need to be given your full attention in the planning process.

Are you one of those people who makes resolutions for your website and then, because you're busy, busy, busy or because other demands come higher up on your list, you let them slip?

If so, here are some tips to help you form a plan you can stick to with the overall aim of increasing traffic to your site:

Content Updating: The content of your site on a regular basis will help your search engine ranking and this alone could result in more visitors. Do you calendarise reminders to send updates to your web designer? If not, set them up now! If you rely on a developer to do this for you and you're finding it expensive, you may be better off investing in a

CMS: (Content Management System) as you will see the return on your investment over time. If on the other hand your content isn't updated because you don't have the time and you haven't asked anyone else to do it, delegate it now to a Virtual Assistant. 2. CMS A professional web designer can develop a CMS which allows you or your PA to update your content and add additional content. Just remember, on some pages of your website the text will remain the same, and won't need to be changed frequently. For example, you will probably want your contact details to remain static. Examples of these may be:
- Blog
- Newsletter
- Articles
-Be Organised
Your web designer will need to know which areas of your site will need to be changed on a regular basis so that he or she can plan the CMS accordingly. Your content obviously needs to be written and then added to your site. Whether you do this yourself or you delegate it, just schedule regular times to assign team-members or the people assisting you with sourcing images - there are writers out there who, for a fee can write your content for you.

Image & Design: You already have a corporate identity and your website needs to reflect this. A poor design gives an unprofessional image and if your existing design is not connected to your brand, potential customers may become confused. When you make changes to your website, sometimes the design becomes affected so it is worth taking a cold hard look at the navigational elements to ensure that the information you have updated is within the relevant area of your site. It may be that you used a pre-set template which you have added to over a few months and this may no longer be appropriate for your content as your business evolves. If this is the case, don't be afraid to ask for help. Your original designer could upgrade your site for you or, you could go to a new designer and ask them to re-organise your content to create a new and better image. Keep in mind that under your new organised regime, you will be adding fresh content on a regular basis, so ensure that whoever you use for your re-design is aware of this before creating the new navigational aspects.

Ensure your website is working for you: Your site really needs to be working away for you in the background. For example, by linking it to your blog you are creating credibility in your area of expertise and you will improve your search engine ranking. If you sell products rather than services, your site should be an e-commerce site, selling those products while you work on other areas of your business. Don't forget to show your visitors what you and your business can do for them allow for an area to display client testimonials.

Prioritise & Get Smart: List the issues before taking steps to involve help. By writing them down, it will become clearer whether you need a designer, a Google Adwords specialist or someone who can build your CMS, or a combination of all of these. Most companies will assess the existing areas of weakness and provide a quote for their solution. It might however be a good idea to spend some time with all three of the aforementioned which will ensure your investment is well spent. The team you choose can then, between them, create a plan to produce your re-design according to your budget and priorities. It is important to calculate a budget from the word go. It's better to be realistic, and if you know you won't have the time available to write a regular blog, either outsource it to your writer or VA or get rid of it! If you'd like your designer to manage your content updates, you can ask them to help you with the scheduling.

Easier Longterm Management: It really isn't that difficult to re-plan your website and, like anything which requires a bit of thought and dedication, just think of the benefits it will bring to you and your business in the longer term. By having a clear, itemised schedule, developed in conjunction with your web designer, you will find it much easier to manage as well!

What are 'Call to Action' buttons?

Wow, your search engine ranking is high and your website is on the number one page in Google. You are getting lots of visitors to your website, but hey, why are they not doing what you want them to do and why are they not converting into leads?

Well this is why all of your pages within your website should have a clear and easy to find 'Call-to-action' button.

Call to action buttons are links within web pages which result in an action from the user.

The most popular of these are buttons which, when clicked on, perform an action (e.g. "Free Download!") or take the user to a web page containing additional information (e.g. "Sign up now") These buttons are asking the user to take action.

Successful Call to Action Buttons
For call to actions to work successfully they need to be planned well and should be part of your information architecture process.

Draw attention with size
Within web pages the size of a visual effect dictates its level of importance. Once you have decided how important a certain action is, you can decide on the size of your button. Compare the size of call to action buttons with business logos. If you want to grab the user's attention, the call to action button should be approximately 20% wider than the logo. Although the logo might be situated higher up on the web page, the eye is drawn to the action button due to its size in comparison with the surrounding elements. To indicate the relative importance of a call to action compared to other actions, you can vary their sizes.

Placement on the web page
To draw attention to a call to action button it is always preferable to place them higher up on your web page. This is because visitors to your page will be more inclined to see the button and therefore subsequently to take action.
Putting a call to action button on a distinguished area is one way of making it stand out in a web layout.

Another effective alternative is to place a call to action button prominently in the middle of a web page.

Ensure your call to action buttons stand out from surrounding text by clever use of whitespace. The more whitespace there is in between a call to action button and a surrounding element, the less connected they are but conversely, if you have other elements that can help convince users to take action, reducing the whitespace between those and your call to action button could be the way to go.

Use strong colours
The use of bold contrasting colours in your call to action buttons will draw attention to them compared to their surrounding elements and displaying the not so important actions below the primary actions makes perfect sense.

Convey a sense of urgency
By using persuasive words such as NOW and IMMEDIATELY it is possible to change the user's thinking and convince them that by procrastinating they might miss out. Explain what users can expect and tell them that taking action is not as difficult as they might at first think.
Eliminate any concerns users may have by anticipating the questions which might hold them back before clicking on a button - you can answer them in advance, thereby building trust and increasing click conversions.

Why should a website be compliant with standards?

People often tell me they have a "friend" who is technically-minded and who has offered to design their site for them for next to nothing. So why should they go for a professional web designer?

Understandably most people don't know what professional web design involves or how long it takes. A professional web designer spends time perfecting the detail and will develop a website which is compliant with standards and understandably charges accordingly for his or her time.

Comparing the two, you need to understand the web standards issue.

For web pages to display correctly within a browser, they need to validate. Those which don't validate rely on error correction by the browser itself and the concern is that future browsers may not work in the same way they do now, resulting in a website "breaking" as technology moves on. Due to the fact browsers are built to comply with existing standards it is vital your new website is compliant.

A standards compliant site will not only improve search engine visibility but can help with performance. As a standards compliant site is error-free, the pages contained within it are far more likely to be indexed. Like browsers, search engines use error correction on pages which don't validate but there is no way of knowing how a search engine will treat an error it could index just a specific part of a page or even miss out certain pages completely.

Web pages which validate are found by a browser more quickly than those containing errors.

A standards compliant site helps ensure your website is accessible. Despite your site containing all the relevant coding to allow disabled users to view it, one error in a page could mean it is not accessible at all.

How do you know if the time is right for a re-design?

Why a re-design is so important

There are a lot of people who set up a website and then leave it alone, never re-evaluating the design or updating the content.

Presumably their aim is to gain business from their website - doing nothing is not going to get them the results they're hoping for, as unfortunately it is not that simple. Successful websites are not static advertising boards and owners, together with their designers, work hard at keeping their content fresh.

Like most things, website design changes as time and technology move on. Even elements which were popular last year are already going to look dated. It is crucial to provide your visitors with regular updates which clearly portray the message your business is sending out.

Checklist to help you decipher whether or not your site requires a re-design

If your site features out of date technology, it is more than likely crying out for a re-design. Below are some out of date elements which are good enough reasons for you to ask your designer to re-design your site:

Your site -

Has been built entirely on Flash

Includes Tables, table-based designs can confuse spiders which see more than what is visible to your site visitors

Uses Frames

Contains Intro pages

Features out of date content

Contains Web 2.0 glossy buttons

Has not been updated in the past two years

Doesn't feature a Content Management System

Is not being found by Search Engines and your ranking is low

Conversion rate is low and you are not obtaining any leads

Stay one step ahead of your competition and if your main competitor has just re-designed their website, you should re-design yours!

Remember a good site plan is required in order to create a successful website.

The most important part of getting a website is the planning because this will be vital to the success of your website. To carefully plan in the beginning will avoid errors, safe costs and will make a better end product.

1. Set your goals

Setting goals will give you the focus as you plan the various elements of your website

Why do you need a website?

What type of website do you need?

What functionalities does the website need in order to achieve your objectives?

What do you want to achieve with your website and what do you want your visitor to do?

2. Research

Who is your target market?

Where is your target market?

What is your target market looking for?

Check out your competition - what do you like and dislike?

What techniques are available and what will suit your needs?

3. Target your market

Your target market defines your brand and this will be very important for the right choice of the

domain name

design

content

4. Write your content

The content is king and is important to draw your visitors into your website and to grab their attention.

What information does your website need to include?

How much content will you need?

Research and include the keywords you are targeting to rank highly in the search engines

5. Develop a structure for your website

This will be important for your navigation and to make it easy for your visitor to find what they are looking for.

Create a website hierarchy with your most important pages at higher level

Decide how the content will be divided

Group the pages according to topics

Think about how visitors will navigate your website and what you want them to do

6. Start date & update frequency

Set yourself a goal as to when you want the website to start and when you want it to be launched

How often do you plan on updating your website - daily, weekly or monthly?

Now you can start with the design of your website - bearing in mind your website goals, target market and your content.

Ingredients for Successful Web Design

Good design and layout is crucial to your website's success. Here, OS WebDesign gives you some key design rules:

Have a clean and simple layout

The layout is how your web page is arranged. Pages should be easy to read and uncluttered. They should each contain a handful of paragraphs and a small amount of design and/or imagery, together with your business logo and contact details. Your website should also fit within a standard browser window.

Opt for easy navigation

The navigation buttons or links of a website are usually placed in one of three areas: across the top of a page or down the left or right hand side. Regardless of where you choose to put them, try to keep the text on the buttons or in the links brief. Anything longer than one or two words will cause this part of your layout to be too wide and crowd your content area. You can usually fit up to eight buttons (may be less depending on how much text is used) across the top of web pages. Some layouts with top page primary page buttons will display sub page links in a second row across the top or down the left hand side of the page. Navigation buttons down either side of the page do not run into any limitations due to the endless amount of vertical space. Remember though, the amount of text on the buttons will greatly affect the amount of space for content.

Use soft, neutral background colours to keep the focus on the content

Choose your colours carefully. Keep in mind that your tastes may not be appealing to your target audience! Think about the "white space" on your site. In general, white space is the cornerstone of good website design. Keep the background areas where your information or products will be displayed white or another light/pale colour. Dark or oddly coloured backgrounds distract visitors from your information and can make it difficult to read. Background images are a big no-no for the same reasons and can make pages load more slowly. Coloured text should be used sparingly. Contrast is key or it can be very difficult to read.

Make sure your website looks good in different browsers

Web designers have no control over which browser someone will use to look at your website. Browsers are software programs - such as Mozilla, Firefox, Safari and Opera - that enable you to view WWW documents. There are a range of external factors that effect how a web page will look to the user. These include:

The user's computer system

The preferences the user has set up

How the browser decides to interpret the page

Whether the browser supports the code used on the page

Bugs in the web browser
